We are pleased to share that in alignment with Step 2 of the Government of Alberta provincial re-opening plan, we will be offering pre-booked low-intensity fitness sessions at the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by CNOOC starting Thursday, March 4!
At 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday March 3, you will be able to begin pre-booking low-intensity fitness work-outs at the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by CNOOC as well as at the Christina River Enterprises Indoor Running Track. Effective March 4, the hours of operation for the Anzac Recreation Centre fitness centre and running track will be:
- Monday – Friday: 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Saturday – Sunday: Closed
Please note that in alignment with Step 2 restrictions, all amenities at the Anzac Recreation Centre remain closed for drop-in visits. Only individuals with pre-booked fitness workouts will be able to access the facility.

INDOOR FITNESS STEP 2 GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA GUIDELINES
- Unsupervised low-intensity individual and group exercises are now allowed by appointment only.
- Mandatory physical distance of 3 metres is required between participants, including coaches and trainers, at all times, and masks must be worn at all times by trainers and those participating in low-intensity activities.
- All indoor fitness must be pre-registered – no drop-ins allowed.
- Low-intensity exercises include weightlifting, as well as low-intensity treadmills, and related equipment.
- High-intensity activities, including running, spin and high-intensity interval training, continue to be allowed only on a one-on-one with a trainer basis, or training with a household and one trainer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I pre-book my spot for the fitness centre or Christina River Enterprises Indoor Running Track?
To pre-book your spot you can either call guest services at 780-793-6900 or book in person.
Why am I able to only come in at certain times?
Based on the Government of Alberta Step 2 Guidelines released on March 1, all indoor fitness must be scheduled or by appointment only. To ensure the health & safety of our staff, members & guests, everyone is required to book their schedule time either over the phone, or in person.
Am I able to pre-book my indoor fitness opportunities for the fitness centre or Christina River Enterprises Indoor Running Track?
Members are able to book their spot up to 7 days in advance, while non-members or facility pass holders can book up to 3 days in advance.
What if I can’t make it to my booking for the start time specified?
Members and Guests can choose when they show up for their booking within their allotted time. However, there will be no additional time added onto the booking. The timeframes are set in place to allow other members & guests time to complete their workouts, and for staff to ensure the areas are ready for your arrival.
There is nothing available for the times I am wanting - what can I do?
Once spaces are filled, we kindly ask all members & guests to look for other times available, or check back in case another spot becomes available.
How many spots can I book?
We ask that members and guests limit their bookings to 1 workout per day to allow for others to enjoy our amenities at this time.
Indoor Low-Intensity Fitness
Are cardiovascular machines available at the fitness centre?
At this time only treadmills are available and they have been programmed to a maximum speed of 3 miles per hour. In addition, the maximum incline is programmed to 7.
Can I use dumbbells or any other lifting equipment?
Yes, you could use any lifting equipment that is not marked as unavailable.
Am I required to wear a mask?
Yes, as per the Government of Alberta Guidelines all participants and trainers are required to wear a mask for low-intensity training.
Can I share equipment or do circuits with my friend?
At this time sharing equipment or circuit training is prohibited. A minimum of 3 metres physical distance between participants is required.
Can I use the Christina River Enterprises Indoor Running Track to warm up before I head to the fitness centre?
Yes, you can use the running track, adhering to low-intensity exertion.
Can I run at the Christina River Enterprises Indoor Running Track?
Only low-intensity exercise is permitted at this time. For example, a fast walking pace is acceptable.
What is the difference between “High-Intensity” exercise, and “Low-intensity” exercise?
The recently updated Alberta Health Order defines a high-intensity physical activity as an activity that results in significantly increased respiration rates in a person. A low-intensity activity does not result in significantly increased respiration rates.
Are the fitness change rooms available?
Yes, they will be available with limited capacity.
How do I reactivate my membership for prebooking?
To reactivate your membership please contact guest services, and they will assist you with reactivating your annual, continuous, or group membership. You can contact guest services either by phone at 780-793-6900, email, or upon your first visit.
What If I don’t want to reactive my membership yet?
All memberships will remain on hold at this time, unless requested by the member to reactivate. A reactivation date for all members will be re-established at a later date as more amenities become available.
Do I get a discount on my membership because some amenities are not available?
At this time we are not providing discounts on our memberships or facility passes, however members can choose to either put their membership on hold at this time if amenities they wish to utilize are not available or they can reactivate it to be able to book their indoor fitness. Can I cancel my membership or get a refund?

What will the hours of operation be during this step 2?
Monday – Friday: 1pm-9pm
Bookings for Fitness Centre will be 1.5 hour (90 minute) increments with 30 minutes in between bookings. Bookings for the Running Track will be 1 hour (60 minute) increments with 30 minutes between booking. The time in between bookings allows our Sports & Fitness Specialists to ensure the spaces are clean and sanitized.
Step 2 Guidelines
What amenities will be open with the Step 2 Announcement?
With the easing of Individual Indoor Fitness announced on March 1, we will be allowing members & guests to utilize the fitness centre and Christina River Enterprises Indoor Running Track for low-intensity fitness activities. These activities include walking, low-impact usage of some cardio equipment, stretching, and light weightlifting. All members & guests must pre-book their spots in advance which can be done online at macdonaldisland.ca, over the phone, or at Guest Services.
What are the guidelines around low-intensity workouts?
Low-intensity fitness includes activities not focused specifically on cardio, that have a low depth and rate or respiration, including Pilates, stretching, low-intensity yoga, light weightlifting, and low-impact use of some cardio equipment.
Why is some equipment not available at this time?
A: With the Government of Alberta’s Step 2 Guidelines released on March 1, only low-intensity indoor fitness activities are currently allowed. Because of the guidelines around low-intensity indoor fitness we have limited the availability of some cardio equipment, as well as ensured all equipment is 3 metres apart.

Why is the Anzac Recreation Centre closed?
On December 8, the Government of Alberta announced new restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19. These restrictions include the closure of all recreation centres in the province. On January 29, 2021 the Government announced the easing of certain restrictions under their 4-step plan to reopen businesses, including permitting one-on-one personal fitness training. As this service is not offered at the Anzac Recreation Centre currently, the Centre will remain closed to the public.
When did the closure begin?
On Saturday December 12, 2020 the Anzac Recreation Centre Presented by CNOOC closed to the public.
How long will the closure last?
We are monitoring announcements from the Government of Alberta, and will determine reopening based on the restrictions enacted in each step of the provincial reopening plan.
I currently have an active membership, what will happen to it?
All annual, group, and continuous memberships have been put on hold until we are able to re-open our facilities. All monthly facility pass holders will be credited back a prorated amount onto their account for the time missed.
Can I cancel my membership or get a refund?

Myself or my child are registered for programming; how will we be compensated for this?
All programs currently affected will receive a prorated credit onto their account for the remaining classes. Refunds can be requested through Guest Services by email
What about my arena facility booking?
At this time all bookings are cancelled. All deposits will be refunded to the main contact’s account. Refunds can be requested through Guest Services by email.
