(Fort McMurray, February 14, 2014) - The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to invite the community to the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Anzac Recreation Centre on Saturday, March 1 at Noon.

The ceremony, which will include representation from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), the Government of Alberta, the RRC and other community partners will be followed by free scheduled activities at the various amenities at the new facility. A full schedule of events is available at ONErec.ca/Anzac. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

The 112,000-square foot Anzac Recreation Centre includes an NHL-sized arena, fitness centre, field house, children and youth activity spaces, indoor running track, multi-purpose rooms and other amenities. The facility was developed by the RMWB to meet the growth of the community, which is projected to grow to 6,000-8,000 residents by 2030. Architecture: ATB and PCL Construction are architectural and construction management firm, respectively, for the project.

The Anzac Recreation Centre can be accessed by community members through the new ‘ONE Pass’, a membership program that will enable pass holders to access all facilities under the RRC umbrella, including the Suncor Community Leisure Centre in Fort McMurray. Hours of operation at the Anzac Recreation Centre are Noon to 10:00 pm on weekdays and 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on weekends and statutory holidays.

“The new Anzac Recreation Centre has been designed and built with the current and future needs of the Anzac community as the top priority,” said Ron Sturgess, RRC Board Member and Anzac resident. “This impressive new facility will bring to Anzac an innovative approach to community recreation, programs and events. On behalf of the RRC, I would like to thank Mayor Melissa Blake, RMWB Council, especially Councillor Jane Stroud and RMWB administration for their collective vision and leadership in setting the stage for this opportunity.”

An official grand opening celebration is being planned in collaboration with the Anzac community for the weekend of May 3. More details will be released in the weeks ahead.
